 Quality of Life (2004)
IMDB rating: 6.60
Plot: Meet Michael “Heir” Rosario, the most prolific and talented graffiti writer from the Mission District in San Francisco. At age ten, in a desperate search for fame and identity, Heir began writing his name on surrounding urban landscapes. More than a decade later, Heir has evolved into a brilliant street artist. With the support of his best friend and partner-in-crime, Curtis “Vain” Smith, Heir has covertly decorated the canvases of concrete and steel throughout the Bay Area. However, when Heir and Vain are arrested for painting, their secret identities are revealed and creative outlets abruptly severed. Faced with restitution and the prospect of serving hard time, Heir and Vain struggle to maintain their creative passion. The paths they choose threaten to unravel their lifelong friendship and, ultimately, their lives.

Are you tired of people telling you that you don't need medication?
but you are already on it, it works and your mental illness definitely has a medical cause?
I see this a lot on this board, people giving "advice" to people to stay away from medicine.
There may be herbal remedies out there but they are iffy and you cannot risk stopping your medicine to try anything else that may or may not work.
I need my medicine and am more than a little put off by people telling me that I don’t or that I am being poisoned. Quality of life is most important and you can’t have it if you have untreated mental illness. My meds literally saved my life and my marriage.
What do you think?
I am bipolar I by the way, with psychotic features
I think you are right.

People have mental illnesses that NEED medication. Some people with depression have a lack of the necessary chemicals they need therefore the medication is 100% needed. Of course there is an extent to everything, but prescribed meds are okay. I have to be on meds for depression and I know for a fact that they are helping me. It’s not just "in my mind" as some would say. Those people who say that do not know what you’ve been through, how you’ve felt, ect. Now that you are enjoying life and are given the opportunity to, go ahead. Remember it’s your life, so go. Live your life, not the life they want from you. You’ve got the strength to ignore their remarks now that you are healthy so do it. Go love life, and pray that someday they can too.

I agree! My mother was bipolar and meds helped her function normally. People who have not experienced mental illness often just don’t get it! Herbal remedies may be okay for someone who has a temporary case of the "blues" but rarely will they help with true mental illness. Psychiatry and the research behind it needs to be respected!

I agree 100% with you! I always recommend Therapy "first",but there is NOTHING WRONG with taking any medication that is going to improve YOUR(and the people around you that deal w/your illness as well) quality of life.
If people don’t have insurance,or they want something different, then I will ofcourse recommend "natural" alternatives.
I was recently "knocked" myself over a comment about the use of Benzodiazpenes(over 2 weeks) which I have studied to be SAFER than SSRI’s…but many people dismiss them due to addiction potential.
Well,I say if it comes down to a Benzo daily for life…or no life at all(panic/severe anxiety/ect)….choose LIFE
You do what YOU need to do….nobody has to live it but you:-)

No one says that to me anymore (probably for good reason!) But I did have one friend a few years ago who would just not shut up about it. I finally just cut off all contact with her because she was detrimental to my well-being. It is something to consider.

I agree. I personally need my medication for my depression, anxiety, OCD, and schizophrenia. Without medication I would be completely delusional and extremely sad and anxious. You can’t know what’s best for a person, so you shouldn’t suggest that they try something other than what the doctor recommends. Doctors know best. It’s especially bad for me to hear that it’s poisoning me, because I have delusions of what the meds are doing (I think they’re feeding an alien chip in my brain). I have OCD obsession with whether or not they’re slowly poisoning me. The only thing worse than this is when people shove religion down your throat and insist that the problem is all spiritual. I am NOT possessed, and I’m perfectly fine where I am spiritually.

I have had the same experience. GRRRRR,
People who know NOTHING about true clinical depression, giving me advice about meditating and drinking chamomile tea. (that would be just great with my asthma.) People telling me that my depression was caused by PEPSI !
My meds saved my life, too. like you, literally.
You say you are more than a little put off. true, true.
i am royally pi**ed off by people with NO knowledge of me, my history, medicines, or brain chemicals spouting crap that actually could lead to someone less stubborn than me to killing themselves.
feel free to email me when you want to commiserate about the
know-nothings that give advice.

Yeah they are attracted to this forum and apparently have nothing else to do, but I am 99% sure they do that because they are sore about getting a diagnosis and prescribed meds themselves so they go on these vindictive tirades to discredit the people who made such an insulting accusation. It is hard to care anymore with years of isolation, but a couple quickies, I had an oral surgeon tell me that I don’t need schiz meds without him actually talking to me, just looked at the list I gave them, I guess bad luck with these guys cause another oral surgeon told me that I don’t take meds for schiz, they are drugs and I take them to get high (party on dude I got the Thoraziine), and the barber found out my story and told me there is nothing wrong with me and I am defrauding the social security administration and pulling it off because I "know all the tricks".If I sit down and think I can usually feel better about them shunning me when I realize I don’t really have a high opinion of them anyway so why let them hurt me.

There are a few natural things that are quite effective for some mental illnesses. Some though can be just as harmful as medication or even more harmful. But the most important thing is to do something that works for you. Different things work for different people. One person’s poison can save another person’s life. Often multiple approaches are necessary. Medication can be a good way to start. What I usually do is just give those people a thumbs down.
