What is it like to be an actor/actress?
This has been on my mind for the past week.. what’s the lifestyle of an actor/actress like? Before this i couldn’t give a crap about celebrities and actors but there’s one actress that really touched me, i.e. AnnaSophia Robb. Her movies are just so sincere and sweet, and at the same time heartbreaking. Her performance in Sleepwalking and Bridge to Terabithia had such a great emotional weight. The latter even made me break down in tears (i’m an 18 year old guy btw) and wonder about the brevity of life. I guess it’s the way i could relate to her, her sincerity and her drive to help people and she’s so close to my age.

This left me wondering about what the lifestyle of an actor/actress would be like? Is it chaotic or relaxing, fun or depressing? I think it’s great to be able to travel the world and meet so many people. I do know the realities of the acting business though, like how only 2% of that profession earn enough to put food on their table. But at the same time I know how satisfying it is to be able to work out your passion in the arts.

Could someone tell me the downsides of the profession and how it’s like to be in that field? Such as auditions and stuff… I just want to know the realities of it. I always liked a profession that lets you use your creativity and serves as an emotional outlet, but are you really comfortable doing it when you have so many people watching you as you’re doing it(film crew, etc). Not to mention the lack of personal life that follows due to paparazzi. Does it rob you of some part of your life that you would have if you hadn’t gotten into it? Is the profession as great as people make it to be?

Just to add a little bit of info about myself, when I was younger I wanted to become a vet, then a surgeon (people have said i was good with my hands), then an environmentalist (cause people are basically raping mother earth). I like to go for things out of the norm so i didn’t want to become a doctor/lawyer/engineer. RIght now i’m in university going for an actuarial science major and music minor (i love music and i’m in a band) but i’m having second thoughts. I really want to go around the world helping people and do volunteer work. I was thinking of maybe doing this on-off thing of working one year and doing volunteer work the next. I know that’s not really possible and it would just piss off my boss, but that’s what i want to do. The reason for that is there’s nothing that hurts me more than the thought of us living the comfortable life when there are millions of people who never had the chance to experience even a fraction of the luxuries we have. After all life is short, we live work and die. There must be more meaning to it

Sorry for the randomness of my questions but i had to get these thoughts out of my mind. I would really appreciate it if someone in the acting business could give me some insight into that profession especially the bad sides that most people don’t know. I’m open minded so go ahead and say anything you like, as long as it’s honest. also is there a community program in Canada that sends you to different parts of the world and pays for your food, lodging, flight etc? Thanks a lot

Well, the bonus for a professional actress such as Anna is when their work has such a strong impact on the audience or even individuals such as yourself. When an actor is working he or she gets to give voice to characters and bring them to life.

The vast majority of working actors are not actually famous and do not have paparazzi chasing them all over the place. Many stars court the attention and then become upset when they realize that they can not control the blaze they themselves started.

The real downside for any actor or actress is the uncertainty in employment. When an actor is not working on a project they are working for work and that can be chaotic when it comes to finances and life planning. Actors who work on tv series, especially the first year or two of a series are literally on egg shells. Suddenly the paychecks are big but you must consider that when you average out what the average 9 to 5 joe makes year in and year out vs what an actor makes when he happens to be working, usually the average joe comes out way ahead. For an actor who gets on TV show, they know a slip in ratings can cause the show to be cancelled and with that, they’re back auditioning for roles with no steady paycheck. When a show goes 5 to 7 years however and the principal actors have been wise with their finances, they should be ok for some time to come if not relatively set for life but the number of actors who gain this kind of financial freedom are relatively small in percentage against the total. The Screen Actors Guild is one of two professional unions, AFTRA being the other, that covers actors in Film and TV. Of the 120,000 or so members in SAG, something like 98% of the membership makes less than $5,000 or $6,000 per year in entertainment income. That means without secondary jobs to pay the bills they would be below the poverty level.

Many people who jump into the industry jump in with total ignorance to the very real business side that will impact them. They think it’s about talent or about who they know and to a some extent this is true but neither is enough to see an actor through to success. In the case of talent, there is more than enough and not enough jobs for everyone to work. In the case of who you know, should you actually happen to know someone of any power in the industry you will find that they WILL NOT STICK their neck out for you and your talent can’t back it up. Relationships are the currency and no one is going to waste it just because you think they owe you some favor. It just doesn’t work that way. In other words, can you very famous uncle who is a big time producer get you the lead role on his next multi million dollar budget? NO. Can he get you a job on set saying a word or two that might get cut in editing or a job with the crew carrying a walkie talkie being a PA on set? Yes. Probably.

Anyway, as I say in my answers all the time, there are plenty of books where you can research the business of being an actor, plenty of autobiographies you can read of star actors who talk about their careers in the business. Pick em up and start reading.
